Located in the Upper Arkansas Valley, Chaffee County encompasses approximately 1, 105 square miles. Over 80% of the county area is public lands. Average elevation on the valley floor rises from 7,200’ in the south (Salida) to 8,100’ in the north (Buena Vista).

Highway

Chaffee County contains the intersection of US 50 (running east-west) and US 24 (running north) and US 285 south. US 50 runs west through Montrose, Gunnison, Grand Junction and on to Utah, and stretches east through Cañon City to Pueblo. US Highway 24 runs north through Leadville to the I-70 corridor. US Highway 285 provides the primary access from Chaffee County to Denver and the Front Range, and has recently upgraded new passing lanes.

Air

Central Colorado Regional Airport, located in Buena Vista, is the County’s main commercial airport. Corporate jet travel is accommodated with a runway measuring 8,300 feet, and high-altitude testing can be negotiated. Rental Car service is available. Salida is home to Harriet Alexander Field, a favorite location amongst aviation hobbyists and globe-hoppers alike.
